a confession

I have a relationship with my BBQ sauce. It is delicious, and I love it a lot. But…it also contains high fructose corn syrup and modified corn starch among other things. Now, I’m pretty sure a couple tablespoons per day won’t kill me, but I’m always up for a challenge, and reducing the number of processed products I consume is a constant process.

Homemade BBQ sauce is surprisingly easy to make (recipe here), and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out; I might use a little less smoked paprika next time. I also added pineapple concentrate for a little sweetness.

I made a huge batch of this salad last week and ate it pretty much every day. It is fantastic to have a giant bowl of vegetables at your disposal after work…makes it easy to sneak in your veggie servings each day.

[In the mix]: broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, olives, cucumbers, wild rice, and homemade Italian dressing (olive oil, vinegar, Italian spices).

I also made almond milk ice cubes for my coffee; I normally add a little almond milk anyway, so now it won’t be completely diluted just because it is iced coffee.

Whenever I feel like life’s getting a little too measured, I do something random like making wall art out of paper towel tubes (design sponge idea). At the rate of my paper towel usage (probably not the most green friendly), this piece has the potential to go far…

In other news, it has been incredibly hot here lately, causing two temporary power outages at the hospital (thank goodness I was NOT in the middle of writing a chart note), and making me want to eat ice cream for dinner.

What are some things you’ve done lately to make life easier…or entertaining?

  2. I'm doing the chop once, serve thrice thing with fresh vegetables where you cut up the whole pepper, onion etc. at one time so it's easier to add to meals throughout the week. I don't know what I haven't been doing this all my life.

  4. I love making giant bowls of salad that keep for a couple of days. They make life so much easier!

Love that you made your own BBQ sauce. I love BBQ sauce as well as ketchup, and making both is on my list!

  6. Hey Em,
I have a question for you: what are your thoughts on food combining? it's all the rage lately, it seems, with Kim Snyder et al, and I was interested to hear your thoughts on it.

  7. Haha, that wall art is adorable!

Well my family had the terrible luck of having the a/c break down two days ago right before this heat wave. So we're spending all day and night in the basement to make life easier :)

  8. haha, I'm reading your post as I add BBQ sauce to my raw chicken before I cook it (I think it protects it from those harmful AGEs.....who knows). I would love to try making my own one day, but for now Nick and I use enough that I don't think I want to go down that route. Maybe one day.

I love your wall art. Emily, you are SO creative!

  9. Aw, I love barbecue sauce too, probably because it's full of delicious sugar (and smokey flavor). I'll try making my own though, just to see the difference!

  10. Ok the papertowel roll art is awesome. You're just so darn creative! Also, your salads are always A+. I was drooling over your salad post. Lately, I've been embrasing the heat...aka lounging in my backyard with my pup drinking iced coffee and reading. Half time in the shade- half time in the sun (vitamin D!). I figure I can fight it or go with it...I'm totally a go-with-it kinda girl :) xo!

  15. the homemade bbq sauce sounds awesome--i would never even have thought to make my own but it sounds like it would be a lot of fun to experiment with! and the idea of frozen almond milk ice cubes is brilliant!

  16. i can't live without condiments. BBQ sauce is definitely a killer with its addictive qualities. lol

When it gets really hot outside, I like to make large batches of salads for meals for the week as well. I'm the queen of summer salads and some of my favorites are greek orzo salad, yogurt potato salad, broccoli salad, melon fruit salad, corn and black bean salad, chicken salad with grapes and almonds, etc.

Thanks for the ideas..I'm going to try the almond milk ice cubes in my coffee!

  18. ooh BBQ sauce from scratch, nice! love the paper towel decor, cute recycling idea.

  19. I love making my own BBQ stuff... so much more natural :) Totally jealous of the weather you're having... We reached 90 last week and now we're in the low 60s with rain. It feels like October :(

Fabulous way to recycle paper towel tubes... Wedding planning has been relaxing me lately (mostly because we have a year and if I'm working on the planning at night, it means I'm done with work)!

  20. This is random, but I stopped folding my underwear after laundry. What's the point? I go through them fast! Saves me time!

Hee, my own BBQ sauce is less sophisticated than yours: ketchup and soy sauce.

  21. Hi Emily, good for you for making your own BBQ sauce and sharing the process - I bet it was delicious and your salad looks very yummy too - you have some wonderful ingredients in there!

  22. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, olives, cucumbers, and wild rice salad looks so good! I think a dab of BBQ sauce here and there isn't going to hurt anyone, but it's well worth it to experiment. Who knows you might come up with a good product that you can sell someday.

  23. I love homemade bbq sauce! My boyfriend is a sauce champion! A few weeks ago he made us skinless chicken thighs on the bbq with a homemade cherry bbq sauce. Loved it!

  25. I had never though to freeze almond milk ice cubes! love it! I usually always add unsweet chocolate almond milk to my coffee when we have it. I think it's going to get to 110 tomorrow here, ick!

  26. I was just thinking about making some of this sauce & realized we haven't heard from you in a while! Hope life isn't too crazy & you're doing well!

  27. Try to find an organic BBQ sauce. They may use sugar cane instead. That would be better. Good luck.
