It rained all day, and I have to confess that I actually enjoy rain. Despite the fact that the sun is hiding, I like the sound of rain, the slightly melancholy mood it potentiates, and the excuse it provides to eat soup and homemade bread.
[Even without the heat on, my apt is 60 billion degrees, which is awesome for proofing bread.]
I love homemade sourdough bread, but I decided to try this no-knead bread from Mark Bittman since I haven’t made any starter yet. It was pretty easy; you can quickly mix up the dough before work and bake it when you come back. Using whole wheat flour makes the bread especially dense and gives it a nutty flavor.

And this butternut squash and apple soup has become one of my favorites. I pre-cooked the squash yesterday to save time. Confession: I never roast the spices. And I don’t measure them either. But it always seems to work out okay.

In other news, I’m kind of in love with running in the rain. Although I splashed through some major puddles and was completely soaked after an hour, I see rain as a sign that spring is coming (finally…geez!), and I’m pretty excited about that.
Rain…love it or hate it?

I like the rain when I am sleeping or chilling at home, but I HATE it when I am out!
ReplyDeletehate it. but i like it more than snow...
ReplyDeletei havent made bread in forever, i should get on that, yours looks sooo good
ReplyDeleteI actually like rain, and especially the soups and stews I usually make on rainy days. :) However, after a few rainy days, the toddler usually gets cabin fever, which can be challenging! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the rain! Thunderstorms are the best too! I love sitting where I can watch the rain pound down on the roof of the porch and the street beyond. Plus, last Saturday I discovered that I love running in the rain too!
ReplyDeleteI used to hat rainy days because it makes me sad, but recent years I've became an happier person and I start to like it. Just as you said, it's perfect day to bake bread ane have soup! That bread looks great!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of rain, especially riding in it, but I need to get more comfortable with it that's for sure! I do like the excuse to have a comforting bowl of soup and hunk of bread though :) I'm working for a private practice, even though it's not really sports nutrition related, I'm excited for the experience! :)
ReplyDeleteI never measure my spices either :) We're rebels!
ReplyDeleteI'm really intimidated by bread-making, but this looks easy enough for even me! Did you use all wheat flour, or did you use some bread flour?
ReplyDeleteI also like running in the rain, though cooold rain, not so much.
Love it if it's warm rain. Cold rain makes me want to stay in bed.
ReplyDeleteI love rain in the summertime when it's warm outside, but not so much in the wintertime when I'm longing for spring :]
ReplyDeleteAfter living on the island I can do without rain for a bit. We came form Vegas so this was a drastic change. I wish my house got warm enough to actually proof bread, but that won't happen until we move.
ReplyDeleteomg homemade soup and bread!?! I can't think of a better way to celebrate (err..survive!) a rainy day! *PS! I just realized you got your degree at OHIO state!! I'm totally considering going there:)
ReplyDeleteI like rain more than snow, but right now it's a messy mix of both outside and I just want both to go away.
ReplyDeleteahhh i love running in the rain too~ i used to run a lot at gallup park (right next to the hospital!)
ReplyDeleteI love the rain and your pretty bread. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a runner, back in the day, I loved the rain too. Running in the rain is so fun!! I don't mind it now, but it's not my favorite. Mainly I find that my mood is down when it rains, and my hair frizzes :) Yesterday's rain was mainly snow here, which was ironic since I put up our spring wreath yesterday!!
ReplyDeleterain is nice for green grass as long as it doesn't last for days wow great soup and bread looks first class
ReplyDeletehaha i pretty much love anything that is NOT snow! plus rain is a great excuse to sleeep in and get absolutely nothing done! so i guess sometimes i don't mind it!
ReplyDeleteHATE IT! i used to love rain but it rains here ALL THE TIME! and it sucks when i cant go to the park or shop outdoors because of it.
ReplyDeletehello Emily! glad to catch up on your blog. 1) I've never made real bread, but this look so yummy I am inspired once again. let's see if this inspiration turns into baking action this time. 2) I liked seeing the pics of your apt on the other posts..you are so crafty. love the wall decorations. 3)congrats on a successful move! have a great wkend. -Rachel
ReplyDeleteI'm not a rain fan at all. It's kind of refreshing during runs but I don't like falling asleep to it (especially if it brings thunderstorms ahh).
ReplyDeleteOn a side note-We were paired up to do mail swap, if you are still interested. ;)
