changes

I had a lovely weekend of running, eating vegetables, and adventures in the snowy and freezing Michigan weather (yes, I do wear flats all winter, thank you very much).

At the risk of isolating myself from the entire blogging community, I will also say that lately I’ve been leaving oatmeal behind for delicious omelets with cheddar cheese and mushrooms. And lots of black pepper.

I’m teaching another cooking class tonight, and we’re making blueberry parfaits. The recipe calls for crumbled ginger cookies for one of the layers, but I decided to make my own to avoid the food dyes and GMO corn in the packaged version. Fantastic.

The biggest news in life is that I am moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan to work in pediatric nutrition. It will be a big change, for sure, but I’m trying to embrace all opportunities and adventures and to be open to using creativity and innovation in an often straitlaced environment.

Change can be really hard, but I know that the growth that comes with it is important. Reaching outside yourself to do things that are new and slightly scary can open opportunities to make a difference, and that’s valuable to me.

This is also a little rough because I’m a Buckeye, but I’ll be sure to talk lots about our winning record over the Wolverines. If you live in A2, let me know!

p.s. did anyone see this article about the class action Nutella suit? My thoughts:

1) Duh, we all know Nutella isn’t healthful or a great idea for children as a breakfast staple.

2) Yes, their commercials are annoying, but I’m not sure that warrants a lawsuit?

  2. Yeah for the new job. Best of luck with the changes.

So, someone is suing Nutella because they claimed to be healthy? Hello, it's a chocolate spread. No, not sue worthy although the commercial does drive me nuts.

  3. What's a buckeye doing with a scUM mug? ;)

My husband grew up midway between East Lansing and AA, so we stop in AA every time we go to his parents' house. My *favorite* place there is Zingerman's Deli. They have a whole gourmet grocery part of their store, which includes locally made cheeses from their creamery. You should definitely check it out!

  5. Oh man, as a Nittany Lion, I feel for your Michigan pain - but, it's fantastic to hear that you have what sounds like a fantastic job opportunity! Congratulations!

Making a move / leap of faith to something completely new can be very scary, but it also gives you the opportunity for plenty of new adventures. My life would be so different if I hadn't done the move to Arizona a few years ago, and it's a fantastic thing. Good luck!

  8. Ann Arbor is truly the best city in the country. You're going to love it, even as a Buckeye (yuck). The education in Ann Arbor in all forms is top notch.

  9. I was going to apply to a dietetic internship in Ann Arbor that would start this fall! But my mom said no because of the weather. ha! congrats on the new job!

By the way, I was in our nutrition department the other day (Penn State) and I saw your picture on our DI director's door! It was you with other interns and what you had to say about nutrition overall. I got SO excited and said.. Oh my goodness... I read her blog... I love her!!! ahhh it was so funny I just thought I'd share. :)

ps- I wear flats all winter long too even though my toes freeze. :)

  12. Congrats on the job Em! And I love the flats picture - we don't even get snow in Auckland, so I'm a bit jealous! I get that it's freezing, but it would be such a novelty to me!

  13. Congrats! My flats are always tucked away in the winter. I can't stand wet feet/wet pant legs/being cold! I have like 7 different pairs of boots that I wear instead.

The lawsuit on nutella is a bit odd in my opinion, however I don't know much about it. I eat chocolate almond butter instead!

  25. I am sooooooo excited for you! At least you get to keep your Michigan winters in Ann Arbor. :) I've never been there, but I hear it's a nice town (my friend's dad tried to convince me to go to school there...he said, "Susan, I think Ann Arbor would suit you well."). I'm so glad you have a job in pediatric nutrition and I can't wait to hear about it...they'll be lucky to have you!

I also wear flats all winter, and random strangers always ask me if my feet are cold. Well, sometimes...but I don't own anything else!

  29. What an exciting time in your life! I am not big on change either. One of my favorite sayings is "growth cannot occur without change." Sometimes we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone to follow our dreams. Congratulations and I look forward to following you on your journey :)
