reasons to celebrate the new year…

Thanks for your comments on my 2010 recap. It was important for me to look back and remember all of the good things that have happened. The uncertainty of the future is overwhelming, but I was reminded that despite all of the challenges ahead, I am incredibly blessed.

Warm weather! We had some unseasonably warm weather here in Michigan, which led to a 5 mile run in shorts in the middle of winter. Crazy.

As you can see, the snow melted (I’m completely ok with this). So sorry to anyone currently dealing with snow and shoveling and people who don’t know how to drive…but don’t be too jealous, I’m pretty sure it’s blizzarding outside right now.

Everything is pretty brown and ugly, though. I have to admit that the snow makes the park much prettier.

Homemade pizza…I love adding my own toppings and making the crust. Perfect for dinner parties with picky guests (ha).

Hello, new camera. Goodbye, old dinosaur camera which required me to take 60 billion photos(+) before getting a decent shot.

Ice cream is seriously my favorite thing ever, although I really don’t eat it a lot in the winter. CSN was kind enough to provide this Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream, and Sorbet Maker for review. I like the idea of adding my own ingredients without additives, preservatives, and a plethora of food dyes.

Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker in White

The Cuisinart was super easy to use, and it didn’t take long to make this vegan coconut mango ice cream. One note on the recipe: cut the sugar in half or leave it out completely; coconut milk is definitely sweet enough on its own.

Catching up with friends…on life lately. Sometimes I’m bad at keeping in touch, but I really appreciate the friendships that pick up right where they left off.

Obviously 12 days of giving was not completed in December. But who says that giving needs to be isolated to the holiday season?! So…I’m extending the series into January.

Day 8: Donate your surplus sweaters…

The Salvation Army is a great place to donate your gently used but no longer worn clothing, furniture, and housewares (especially as you’re making room for your Christmas presents). When you donate or purchase from a Salvation Army store, you are also supporting their Adult Rehabilitation ministry. Find a store near you!

What things are you celebrating so far in 2011?

  1. Warm weather in Michigan? Now that IS crazy! And a great blessing! ;)

I'm celebrating somewhat maintaining a regular sleep schedule in 2011!

  2. I am celebrating by living my life to the fullest :)

  3. warm? yay! i'll give you that snow makes things look pretty but that means cold too. i thoroughly enjoyed my mud run the other day in warm temps and melted snow. hahah.

  4. I love the ice cream maker. Awesome invention. I can't wait to try that recipe :) PS I really enjoy reading your blog. You do such an awesome job of presenting research and opinions in a way that lets people make decisions for themselves. You are awesome.

  5. Homemade pizza is the best kind in my opinion! And I soo wish I had an ice cream maker.

  6. happy new year Emily! So glad to know that you're already enjoying the 2011. I'm celebrating it with my family~~~ :D Love it!

  7. Pizza and ice cream are making me drooool..Lovely click.

  8. Bah, winter thaw is simultaneously frustrating and refreshing. I could do without the brown ickiness, but I do love an occasional run in fewer than 50 layers.

...Are those artichokes that I spy on your pizza! I love them!!

  9. Yep, me too...I love your plaid shoes!! Who cares if the ground is brown if you can see those shoes walking by. Instant pick-me-up!

You got an ice cream maker, you lucky dog! Jonathan would kill me if I invited another kitchen appliance to come live with us. I would have helped you eat up the coconut mango ice cream. It's one of my favorite flavor combinations!

  10. Yay! Congrats on the new camera... And I LOVE your boots :)

  11. i absolutely love those boots of yours---too cute!!

your pizza looks yum too, and i'm pumped for you and your ice cream maker ;) it's cold in STL but i think i need to break that out again soon!

  12. i just got SO in the mood to whip out my ice cream maker :) glad you had such a wonderful holiday and warm weather this time in michigan! so exciting :)

  13. Im in Ohio and were having really nice warm weather too! I went for a run today and it began to snow halfway through and it wasnt even that horrible. Im on happy camper! I love the boots too :) And your coconut mango sorbet looks yummy - sounds like something I would like for sure!

  14. First off, I love Cuisinart, so I am not surprised that this ice cream maker is on my want list now, except for the very small problem of "we already own one" and I should probably start by using that one more often :)

  15. Hey!!
I'm Ashley, the girl behind the blog A Hasty Life. I just started the well known 30 for 30 challenge. I chose 30 articles of clothing (including shoes!) to wear for 30 days. I would love for you to bop on over to my blog and leave your feedback! And if you like my blog, follow along!

It was a pleasure *meeting* you!

  16. Our snow is melted too, and I love it. I'm waiting for the next big snow fall though, I'm sure it'll be any day!

Once you create some good recipes, we'll have to open up an ice cream store to compete with Jeni's! We will have granola and great toppings, and it will be 100% gluten free. Sound good?! I'm glad you finally found a good ice cream maker. YOu'll love it!

  17. I need to dig out my ice cream maker...I'm hoping I didn't send it home with my parents! Love homemade ice cream soooooo much.

Leave a comment; I'd love to hear from you!
