Hi Everyone [and welcome new readers!]-
It officially snowed in St. Louis last night. And when I say snow, I mean more than 1” [because that usually gets everyone all riled up around here]. No snow day, though…SLU is too hardcore for that business.
After I posted about roasting almonds, Matt asked if they were nutritionally superior to peanuts. After doing a little research, here’s what I came up with:
sources: almonds, peanuts, nutrition facts
:: takeaway points ::
- both types of nuts offer nutritional benefits and have very similar macronutrient profiles
- although sources I looked at linked both almonds and peanuts to food allergies, I think peanut allergies are more common
- almond butter vs peanut butter: consider added sugars & oils
- there is some concern that peanut butter contains levels of aflatoxin, which is linked to cancer, and I’m doing some more research to find out specifically about levels
- also, I’ve read some conflicting information about the best temperature and time for roasting nuts to prevent oxidation and free radical formation…more info to come
Do you tend to choose almonds/almond butter or peanuts/peanut butter?

I eat peanut butter and almonds ; )
ReplyDeleteI tend to eat more almonds, and typically raw vs. toasted. I occasionally have roasted peanuts, but it's generally once a year.
ReplyDeleteHm, I really like almonds, but I definitely prefer peanut butter, even the gross kind. Maybe I'll learn to like almonds more when I adopt my "nut snob" persona.
ReplyDeletei love almonds way more than peanuts! but i like peanut butter better..weird, huh?
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I really enjoy the taste of almonds more, I think, but peanuts and peanut butter are most definitely kinder to my wallet!
ReplyDeleteLOVE almonds and PB...i love them together thats even better!
ReplyDeleteI like them both - they both taste different to me so I don't think I could choose one over the other!
ReplyDeleteVery Interesting. I like both butters equally but in different ways. For toast: peanut butter and jam or almond butter and raw unfiltered honey. Butters are always one ingredient so sometimes I add a pinch of salt or maple syrup. Ants on a log is classic.
ReplyDeleteRaw almonds are great but not a fan of raw or toasted peanuts especially in mixed nuts. The peanuts take over and make everything taste like peanuts. What about free radicals? JK, haha
I would really like to know what you find out about aflotoxins. I usually get PB with roasted peanuts, so maybe I'm safe? Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteDuring my Master's progam I did some research on aflotoxin and most of what I remember is what it is from peanuts in China (which I think I ate while I was in China), and I think less of a concern here, but I could be wrong, that was 2 years ago and way in the back of my memory.
ReplyDeleteAlso, they are from 2 different familys, since peanuts are legumes and almonds are tree nuts, which makes a pretty interesting difference between the two. I think both are yummy, particularly as PB and AB.
oh wow! this was great to see the comparison of peanuts to almonds! i always assumed that almonds were better for you but this definitely shows that for the most part they're equal! thanks girl :)
ReplyDeleteIt has snowed about 3 inches, but all people in Columbus feel like it's SO MUCH SNOW! You know how we are, even the littlest bit of snow too much!! I was sliding all over in my car though, so I guess I am the same way, haha.
ReplyDeleteThat's easy! Almonds+almond butter because I'm allergic to peanuts :)
ReplyDeletei just saw your message emily, but unfortunately Im still trying to fight off a cold so will not be making it :( def next weekend.
ReplyDeletegreat post! i prefer almonds to peanuts & can't wait to make my own almond butter one of these days!
see you soon!
Well, my first love was peanut butter, but I think I prefer almond butter now, though I still think blistered peanuts > roasted almonds. Thank you for the comparison---I didn't know almonds could prevent weight gain!
ReplyDeleteI eat peanut butter instead of almond butter (more affordable) but I eat almonds instead of peanuts (prefer taste).
ReplyDeletegreat info! Thanks! Im actually a huge fan of almond butter and prefer it over peanut butter. (But I do love both) Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeletei will and forever be a peanut butter girl. haha although cashew butter is really stealing the spotlight.
ReplyDeleteI tend to choose peanut butter over almond butter, mostly because of the price, but I don't really have a preference between peanuts and almonds.
ReplyDeleteI like almonds over peanuts, but I prefer peanut butter over almond butter. Weird huh?
ReplyDeleteThats for answering my question ;)
Both!! I love both of them in nut butter form, also! And I figure that they both have different nutrients, and are both healthy (+ keep me satisfied!) so I just eat whichever I'm more in the mood for. :) Or there's always the option of putting BOTH on that bowl of oat bran! (I have actually done this. My nut butter obsession is a little outta control!)
ReplyDeleteGreat summary of the two with the comparisons. I love peanut butter and almond butter, but I eat more almonds than peanuts...rarely eat peanuts. I love almond butter and apple sandwiches! Yum!
ReplyDeleteThe depth of your research always blows me away, like roasting temps. You're good at what you do, girl!
ReplyDeleteIm allergic to peanuts. That means no peanut oil, peanut butter, and the actual peanut! Instead of almond butter and Peanut butter I eat Soy Butter. My whole family said it tasted like peanut butter, and I believe them :). If your allergic to peanut butter like me try Soy butter it taste like Peanut butter!
ReplyDeleteI use Almond butter, almost daily as snack with my coffee. Reason? It beats all butters and oil in nutritional value. It has only 1 gram of saturated fat per 32 grams (serving). That beats even olive oil that has 2 grams of saturated fat per 14 grams (serving). My verdict? Expensive, but the lowest saturated non animal fat available - along with fiber and other valuable nutrients. There is nothing else like it in the market for the health conscious!
ReplyDeleteGreat info! Could you do your thing with Soy Butter? When and if you ever have time...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the nice chart! Very helpful!
