is it amazing? [my take on amazing grass…p.s. i apparently like brackets]

Sorry for the lack of post-age this week. I’ve completely switched gears [to distribution aka foodservice], and I’m finding myself completely out of my element. I do have foodservice experience, but honestly…I feel uncomfortable in this setting. Needless to say, this experience is really stretching me in many ways.

Teri Jo from Amazing Grass sent me a generous sampling of their products {thanks, thanks!}, and I was really excited because other bloggers have raved about them…and I was super excited because I love snail mail and anyone who uses the traditional postal system.

All of the energy bars from Amazing Grass are:

  • Raw
  • Cold Processed
  • Alkaline
  • Gluten Free
  • Dairy Free
  • Vegan
  • One problem I have with any sort of supplement is the bioavailability of the nutrients in pill versus whole food form. I’m a big advocate of consuming whole foods because you receive nutritional benefits beyond just a concentrated burst of one nutrient or a bunch of random vitamins and minerals in pills that may actually work against one another and inhibit absorption. In addition, some compounds in whole foods work synergistically in ways we don’t understand. When we separate these compounds, they may lose their ability to confer increased nutritional benefits.

Creators of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood say it is considered a whole food because it contains cereal grasses that can’t be isolated and put into a synthetic multi-vitamin. So many Americans fail to include the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables into their daily diets, and just one serving of AG Green SuperFood can provide the antioxidant power of 7 servings of fruits and vegetables.

    More about Green SuperFood:

  • Naturally balanced source of antioxidants, B- vitamins, carotenoids, phytonutrients, enzymes, dietary fiber and essential fatty acids
  • Sustains energy naturally and boosts your immune system
  • Probiotics and enzymes to aid digestion and absorption
  • Complete raw food with powerful antioxidants
  • Alkaline green plant foods help balance acidic pH levels
  • Non dairy, Gluten free, Non-GMO, Vegan

Sounds pretty impressive so far, right? I’ve only tried the Chocolate SuperFood and have to say it did taste a bit grassy, but hey, it is composed of organic wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa, spirulina, chlorella, spinach, and broccoli. While I can’t really comment on the effectiveness of the products, I like that they are organic and do not contain GMOs. I’ll keep you updated on the correlation between AG consumption and energy levels. Has anyone tried AG and noticed any benefits?

Sorry for the lack of recipes lately, but I’ve been eating quick fixes like hummus + zukes & tomatoes in tortillas for lack of time. Hopefully, my upcoming posts will make up for this.

Coming soon…reviews of raw organic vegan energy bars from Love Force and a guest post slash energy bar tutorial from one of my fellow dietetic interns {get ready blogworld, it’s gonna be sweet}!

    1. I recently wrote a post about the natural vs. synthetic issue ("The Vitamin Debate"). It sounds like we're on the same page!

    2. Thanks for the AG review! I've been thinking about trying it for a while, so it's always nice to hear opinions of the product beforehand...

    3. I feel really out of the loop that I haven't tried AG yet. Thanks for your review. It has definitely been the most helpful and informative one so far.

    4. I agree with you on whole foods. I am not sure I would like those green super food if they are grassy, I have some interesting food aversions, but mostly to texture, so who knows. I have a mint allergy so sometimes I get nervous with green foods. I once got cold stone ice cream after someone who ordered mint and I didn't notice. While I was eating mine there was mint residue and my lips swelled up. So much for cross contamination! Speaking of which, good luck in the food service rotation. I am sure you will have some early mornings.

    5. Looking forward to the next review!! Keep 'em coming :)

    6. I like the presentation of the chocolate love bar

    7. I tried all those amazing grass powders, I don't know if I notice any health benefits with only 8 packages of it. I hope you get a better feeling about it.
quick fix meal looks yummy too~ :D

    8. yumm my fav is actually the kids chocolate packet. when i mix it with some vanilla soy milk it reminds me of the carnation instant breakfasts i used to love but like a million times better for U!

    9. I got a similar package a while back and have yet to try it (failing as a blogger over here ;) ). I would rather get my nutrients from real foods but I've heard some good reviews so I think I just need to try it, hah.

I love the wrap! No need to apologize for eating yummy, quick meals!!

    10. I've never tried those products, but I recently saw them at Whole Foods and thought about purchasing them. I have seen so many posts about them, and your post made me realize why they are so popular. I should check them out. I'd probably just stick with the bars..I couldn't stand a grassy taste, even slight!

    11. For the protein, it is part of the process. You have to have muscle breakdown for repair and you must have repair so you need the protein. The end result if you are building muscle is to be in postive protein (nitrogen) balance, so you would be eating more than the body is actually breaking down. If that is not the case then you want to be in balance, so protein in=protein out. If you do damage the muscles (and everyday strain will do some form of damage) you will need protein to repair and it does need to be complete proteins-or contain all essential amino acids. If for some reason there is negative protein balance ther body is catabolic for whatever reason (illness, increased age) and protein consumption does not match what the body needs. It a pretty complex process. Luckily most people eat enough protein-even us vegetarians.

    12. You'll get the hang of foodservice :D I have faith! I have heard mixed things about Amazing be honest, I'm not convinced. I can see why they would be useful if a diet is lacking in produce, but I would guess that most people who would seek out a product like AG are health conscious and consume enough produce anyway? I don't know. I'm not a shake person...

Can't wait for the guest post!

    13. Green super-foods are amazingly good for you, and for any who might be looking for a beverage solution to things, this may interest you.

    14. I loved my amazing grass! I'm sad I had to leave it behind in the US - perhaps it was a placebo effect, but I certainly felt great using it!

Sorry I've been so out of the loop/absent! I always love reading your scientifically slanted posts - they are wonderful! I just get a little behind with reading... and then commenting... you understand. :) Love ya!

    15. Lol it would be hard for me to choke that stuff down! What happened to just eating some vegetables?

    16. I enjoy whole foods in their natural form too. Not sure if I would enjoy them. But loved your review.

    17. i can't really say anything about benefits or energy, but i do like to have amazing grass around... can't hurt to add it to a smoothie, right? :) can't wait to see the raw bar review!

    18. I tried the fig-ginger bar and the sun-flax bread.
the fig bar was delish and reminded me of real crystalized ginger. The bread was very interesting had good flavor and the fat was nice but it also reminded me of astronaut food. overall, i think the bars are great, and they have little GI distress. The bread would be good on a light sandwich.

    19. I'll take a pass on the Amazing stuff, but that Love Force bar looks awesome. I've never seen those. Must find them soon!

So glad you're enjoying yoga in the park - that makes me happy. :)

Sounds like you're trying to make the best of your foodservice experience - I hope it gets better.

      Have a good weekend Emily!

    20. Oh! I love that wrap :) looks perfectly assembled!

keep up the awesome work girl & great review!

    21. Oooh, I've been looking for some good review on amazing grass. I'll definitely be following your blog to see the results! I hope you end up liking it =) I've never tried it myself, but I'm thinking of maybe picking some up.

      And that wrap looks great!

    22. The nutritional fats are great but the one powder I tied just wasn't very good. I need to try the bars though, but I can't justify spending so much on them! They do look good!

And I totally understand about not being able to post as many recipes. I can barely even keep up with normal blogging!

    23. i love these products they have changed my life! i have been drinking them for over a month, twice a day, because i was in a nutritional rut before, with aches and fatique, bordering on depression. Since using the powder in green smoothies, my life has dramatically improved. My skin has cleared up, i no longer wake up tired and i am brimming with energy! it is something i will use for life!~
